Why Benicar is prescribed?
This drug contains Olmesartan which acts as a selective and competitive blocker of angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor and hence it inhibits the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. It lowers the raised blood pressure by blocking the action of certain chemicals in the blood that constricts the blood vessels, so that blood flows more smoothly and thus relaxes the blood vessels. How to use Benicar?
In adults: Benicar is taken orally in the dosage of 10 or 20 mg once daily initially. The antihypertensive effect is considerably present within 2 weeks of therapy commencement.
In elderly: You may consider a lower starting dose of 5 to 10 mg once daily.
