Starlix is a remarkable anti-diabetic drug which contains Nateglinide. This drug reduces glucose level in diabetes mellitus type 2 in patients. How does it act?

Starlix (Nateglinide) is a short-acting oral insulin secretagogue. Nateglinide lowers the blood glucose levels by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas.

Dosage:

 The most suggested initial dose of this drug is 0.5 mg per meal. Doses are generally taken within 15 minutes of the meal, but the time may differ from directly preceding the meal to as long as 30 minutes prior to the meal.

Overdose:

As it is said, the excess of everything is not good. In case of overdosing of this drug, may result in an exaggerated glucose-lowering effect with the development of hypoglycaemic symptoms (dizziness, sweating, tremor or headache)

Management: Adequate action should be taken to correct the low blood glucose (oral carbohydrates). More severe hypoglycaemia with seizure, loss of consciousness or coma should be treated with intravenous glucose. In order to overcome the problem of hypoglycaemia, always keep glucose tablets or liquid glucose. If symptoms still persist, call your physician without delay.

In case of missed dose:

Take the missed dose the moment you remember to take it. On the other hand, if it is roughly the time for the next dose, leave out taking the missed dose and carry on with your regular dosing plan. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

The common commonly reported side effects associated with this drug include low blood sugar, inflammation of bones, chest or throat, headache, dizziness, back pain, constipation, kidney problems, joint pain, hypersensitivity reactions, vomiting, upper respiratory infection, running nose and sore throat.

What are the drug interactions of Starlix?

• Corticosteroids such as Prednisolone
• Thyroid hormones
• Birth control pills such as Oestrogen
• Diuretics like Hydrochlorothiazide, Furosemide
• Sympathomimetics like Salbutamol

Precautionary measures:

• If you a history of any heart, liver or kidney disease, do not take this drug.
• Avoid intake of alcohol while taking this drug.
• If you have an allergy to this medication or Nateglinide, do not take Starlix.

• Pregnancy and lactation
• Children below 12 years of age
• Type 1 diabetes (Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus)
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (excessive ketones in the blood) or diabetic coma (exceptionally high sugar)
• Severe liver disorder
